(Colorado Springs, CO) – After a class win in 2019, Paul Dallenbach returns to Pikes Peak once again for the 98th Running of The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Presented by Grand Turismo. The win in 2019 marks Dallenbach’s 9th in the Open Wheel Class.
Dallenbach and his crew have set their sights once again on winning both the Open Wheel Class and the Pikes Peak Challenge on the 12.42 mile course with 156 turns that begins at 9,390 feet and finishes at the 14,110 foot summit of America’s Mountain – Pikes Peak. The race, normally run at the end of June, was rescheduled to the end of August due to the Coronavirus Pandemic and places many new challenges to the race organizers and teams. For the first time in Pikes Peak International Hill Climb history the race will be run without fans. “We are all disappointed that there will be no fans on the mountain this year and Fan Fest had to be cancelled,” stated Dallenbach. “A major thanks goes out to the PPIHC executives, staff, officials, and volunteers for making the race happen. I am also honored that I am featured on the cover of the program and the event shirts this year.” There’s still time to order yours on the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb website (www.ppihc.org). After much speculation on if Dallenbach would in fact return to the mountain in 2020 he announced his acceptance to race in January, and with that announcement came the announcement about the engine change. “This year we went from our normal 410 Chevy small block engine to a V6 Twin Turbo Buick engine that puts out 950hp,” stated Dallenbach. “It’s the last generation Buick that was run in 1996 by Team Menard at Indy.” It’s been a learning curve but our test on Pikes Peak on August 15th and 16th showed some real promise. The Hoffpauir’s have worked all spring fitting the engine and building all custom parts for the engine to fit properly, nothing is an off the shelf part.” Dallenbach’s appearance this year at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is made possible through his sponsors; Alpine Banks, Rock Valley Oil (RVO), Hoosier Racing Tires, Goebel Construction, Trust Me Vodka, BRM, Pikes Peak International Raceway (PPIR) and Race Central. “We are fortunate to have sponsors who are so generous and into racing, actively participating in our race preparation,” remarks Dallenbach. About the Race - The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is the second oldest motor sports race in America - Only the Indianapolis 500 is older - and a long-standing tradition in Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak Region. First competed in 1916, this year marks the 98th running of the "Race to the Clouds." The running of the race will take place on Sunday, June 30th with race related events during the preceding week. The infamous race is run on a 12.42 mile course with 156 turns that begins at 9,390 feet and finish at the 14,110 foot summit of America’s Mountain – where America the Beautiful was penned - Pikes Peak! As the gutsy drivers climb toward the summit, the thin air slows reflexes and saps physical muscle strength. The thin air - two miles above sea level - also robs engines of 30% of their power at the summit. Competitors and vehicles must be in top shape simply to finish...let alone win! The race week kicks off on Monday, August 24th, due to the cancellation of Fan Fest and fans at the race, all race week events are closed to non crew members and race officials. The race can be seen live on the official Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Youtube Channel and the Mobil 1 Facebook Page. There is no other racecourse in the world like the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. It attracts race crews that are willing to spend several hundred thousand dollars and months of preparation to compete for the right to be the King of the Mountain.
