Dallenbach’s Results at The 101st Running of The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb6/26/2023 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Colorado Springs, CO) - After many weeks of patience being tested; Paul Dallenbach Racing announces Dallenbach’s DNF in the Open Wheel class failing to reach the finish due to an ignition issue at the 101st Running of the Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Presented by Gran Turismo. “The first mile showed the car had a lot of potential; it took off like a rocket, hands down the best it has ever been” stated Dallenbach. “I’m devastated for my team and sponsors; the guys worked so hard for months, ending with this result is a gut punch.” Preparations for this year’s race began in February with a plan to rebuild the Buick V6. Unfortunately, parts delays were the first of many challenges along the way. Engine components arrived at the end of May, just in time for the first weekend testing on the mountain; but yet another roadblock was thrown up when it came time to get the rebuilt engine running again. The team spent many long nights attempting to diagnosis the problem; from swapping the rebuilt engine to the backup engine and swapping out the mid 90’s IndyCar electronics. The swap to a modern-day EFI system by Haltech was the trick that got the car running again and ready for Tech Inspection. “Numerous times I considered withdrawing, but every time the thought came to mind that we had come this far, and we were so close,” stated Dallenbach. “My team’s “never give up” attitude kept this program strong”. Just as the team began getting the car running smoothly and ready for race day, the backup engine lost an oil filer inspection plug and seized during Dallenbach’s first qualifying run of the morning; this led to a 66th starting position. With race day quickly approaching, everyone sprang into action and spent the next 27 hours swapping back to the rebuilt engine that was originally intended and doing a quick shake down at a local racetrack. Race day was much different than the team is used to, as the anticipation for Dallenbach’s run up the mountain lingered around all day with the last place starting position. Shortly after taking the green flag the team was notified that Dallenbach was parked a couple of miles up the course, and his climb to the finish line was over. “2024 plans are in discussion, as we explore a possible new engine package,” stated Dallenbach when asked if he would be back for the 102nd Running. Dallenbach’s appearance this year at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is made possible through his sponsors; Alpine Banks, Hoosier Racing Tire, Skooters Performance Engine, Banks Power, Paradise Printing, BRM Americas, Force Engineering, Sign Edge, Podium Karting & Events, AquaTech, Bergworks, P74 – The Downtown Paninos, and Project Daytona. “We are fortunate to have sponsors who are so generous and into racing, actively participating in our race preparation,” remarks Dallenbach. About the Race - The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is the second oldest motor sports race in America - Only the Indianapolis 500 is older - and a longstanding tradition in Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak Region. First competed in 1916, this year marks the 98th running of the "Race to the Clouds." The running of the race will take place on Sunday, June 30th with race related events during the preceding week. The infamous race is run on a 12.42-mile course with 156 turns that begins at 9,390 feet and finish at the 14,115-foot summit of America’s Mountain – where America the Beautiful was penned - Pikes Peak! As the gutsy drivers climb toward the summit, the thin air slows reflexes and saps physical muscle strength. The thin air - two miles above sea level - also robs engines of 30% of their power at the summit. Competitors and vehicles must be in top shape simply to finish...let alone win!
